Term used to qualify a stock which is probably neither being overexploited nor underexploited and is producing, on average, close to its maximum sustainable yield (MSY). This situation would correspond to fishing at FMSY (in a classical production model relating yield to effort) or FMAX (in a model relating yield-per-recruit to fishing mortality).
